In July 1999 the Rotary Club of Cannington decided to sponsor a Probus Club in the Cannington area. To get things started calls were made to known retirees and a notice was published in the local newspaper, the Canning Times, and a preliminary meeting was held at the Lynwood Arms (now demolished). This meeting was attended by fifty to sixty interested people in the formation of a Probus club.
Eventually the club was formed and a Foundation Meeting was held on the 11th October 1999. The Club was named the Probus Club of Bannister Creek after a nearby creek that emptied in the Canning River. Meetings were to take place on the second Monday of every month, with the exception of January. The club thus formed met every month at the Lynwood Arms but in due course the venue was changed to the Leisureplex, in High Road, Riverton, and as from February 2019, at the Willetton Uniting Church at 16 Herald Avenue, Willetton, WA 6155.
Currently membership to the club has been limited to a maximum of 110 members. The club has a regular membership exceeding ninety, but when membership is capped, a waiting list opens. Fees are kept to a minimum and the annual membership fee is now $65 per annum with an initial joining fee of $25. The annual fee also covers free sandwiches and tea or coffee during the morning break.
Meetings at the Willetton Uniting Church start at 10.00 am sharp, and members usually start arriving from 9.30 am to register and have a friendly chat with their friends. The first session comprises of Management Committee reports followed by a ‘Good News’ session and some entertainment is also provided in this segment. Next follows a tea break and a lot of conviviality takes place with members taking the opportunity to chat and exchange views with each other. The meeting then reconvenes to hear a speaker on a subject of interest to most attendees.
From High Road (top) turn into Herald Ave, past the Senior Citizens Club to the Uniting Church premises (bottom left corner).
